This is not the first thing you think about when you go to visit Rome, yet Villa del Este really deserves a detour to Tivoli, a charming small town located one-hour drive from Rome. This former palace is a marvel of architecture and even more of nature. The main thing about the Villa is its vast and gorgeous gardens where you can take the time to enjoy the impressive concentration of fountains, nymphs, grottoes, plays of water, and music. The imposing constructions and the series of terraces above terraces make it one of the wonders of the ancient world. The addition of water– including an aqueduct tunneling beneath the city — evokes the engineering skill of the Romans themselves. It not only constitutes a much-copied model for European gardens in the mannerist and baroque styles but is also part of the UNESCO world heritage list!
