These famous stairs are running from Joaquim Silva street and Pinto Martins street, officially known as Manuel Carneiro street, straddling both the Lapa and Santa Teresa neighbourhoods. Their conceptor, Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón, said it was “my tribute to the Brazilian people”. He started posing the first tiles in front of his own flat, which his neighbors liked to the point they asked him to continue working on all the stairs. Some of them even gave him a hand to accomplish the art piece while strangers brought him tiles from their own countries. Today, the 250 steps are covered in over 2000 tiles collected from over 60 countries around the world. They have become one of the most popular tourist attraction of Rio de Janeiro.
